Wingham Brush Nature Reserve

Wingham Brush Nature Reserve is positioned on the banks of the Manning River. With two entrance points for the walks, at Farquhar Street and Isabella Street, you can explore 10 hectares of subtropical floodplain rainforest. Excellent picnic facilities and a boat ramp make it a great family destination.

Brimbin Nature Reserve 

Old Port Macquarie Road, Brimbin NSW 2430

Brimbin Nature Reserve is a tranquil place of mangrove-lined waterways for canoeing, short trails for walking and shady areas for picnicking. Enjoy picnicking by the riverside, canoeing down the waterways, or walking leisurely along one of the reserve’s two walking trails. Brimbin is also teeming with birdlife. This was also part of a property owned by New South Wales’ only independent female colonial settler, Isabella Mary Kelly. Ms Kelly’s walking track and Ms Kelly’s Crossing were named in her honour.

Ellenborough Falls

Ellenborough Falls is one of the longest single drop waterfalls in the Southern Hemisphere at 200m high. You can take the timbered walkway to the bottom of the falls, or instead choose to walk to The Knoll to look across at the breathtaking drop. Either way spectacular is the first  word that comes to mind.

Coorabakh National Park

Coorabakh National Park is best known for its impressive volcanic outcrops - Big Nellie, Little Nellie and Flat Nellie and the Lansdowne Escarpment. The scenic forest drive is a loop road and it is recommended to do this drive from north to south due to more favourable road grades. The drive includes numerous lookout spots, cliffs, picnic areas, mountain views and eucalyptus forests with some rainforests. 

Newbys Creek walk to Newbys Cave is a five minute walk to a large overhanging rock formation. Newbys Lookout sits on the edge of the Lansdowne escarpment offering a magnificent view over the Manning Valley. Starrs Creek Rainforest Area has a short boardwalk to allow a wander amongst the beautiful rainforest. Big Nellie Mountain is a large volcanic plug rising 542 metres.

Waitui Falls

Tucked away in the middle of the Comboyne State Forest on the border of the Coorabakh National Park, Waitui Falls are a small, gentle drop in a branch of the Camden Haven River. It is the most delightful family picnic area and swimming in this waterhole is generally safe though young children must be supervised by adults.

 

Cattai Wetlands

Cattai Wetlands are a wonderful and unique reclaimed site located 20 minutes north of Taree. Described as a hidden gem in the Valley, Cattai is a beautiful spot that provides sanctuary for over 100 species of birds, kangaroos, wallabies and goannas. With many walking tracks you can go bird watching, take a picnic or just relax and enjoy the scenery.

Saltwater National Park

Saltwater National Park is a small coastal reserve surrounded by rainforest, close to Taree and Old Bar. Great for surfing, swimming and relaxing, you also have the sheltered lagoon of Khappinghat Creek to canoe or swim in. The surf beaches include Saltwater and Wallabi, and a large, well-equipped picnic area adjacent to these is a perfect spot to relax. Multiple walking tracks give you a chance to explore and the views from the Headland track are not only spectacular but a great place to go whale watching.

Old Bar Beach

20 minutes from Tinonee is Old Bar Beach and the seaside town of Old Bar. The beach extends 6 km between the coastal inlet and Wallabi Point. Old Bar is a well-known surfing beach and a fantastic kite boarding spot. Beach fishing is also a favourite pastime for locals and tourist. The beach is patrolled during the summer months and has a Surf Lifesaving Club. Old Bar Rd runs in the opposite direction to The Bucketts Way from Purfleet roundabout

Manning Point

Manning Point Beach commences on the southern side of the sandy 500 metre wide Manning River entrance. It extends south west for a total of 10 kilometres to the southern mouth of the river. The beach and river provide a wonderful location for fishing, boating and swimming. 4WD’s are permitted on Manning Point beach provided they hold a current beach permit issued by either Greater Taree City Council or Great Lakes Council.

Take a step back in time at Tinonee Museum, 32 Manchester Street. Tinonee was one of the earliest settlements in the Manning. During the 1900`s it was an important shipping trade destination. Housed in a former broom factory the museum has the town’s original slab gaol cell, stables from the old police station and the boom gate and pulley wheel from the Tinonee punt on display. A slice of local history to capture the imagination of young and old whilst you learn of the village’s past.

Enjoy a picnic in the picturesque Horace Dean Park with its barbecues, picnic tables and playground. The park, which is one block from Tinonee Cottages and can be seen from the front verandahs, overlooks the Manning River and Taree Estate. You can also walk down to the jetty at the end of Punt Road and go fishing on the beautiful banks of the Manning, but do remember a fishing permit is necessary for over 18 year olds. Right next to the jetty is the local boat ramp for any enthusiasts who wish to bring their boat with them.

 

Tinonee Park & Tennis Courts

Tinonee Park and Tennis Courts are located on Beecher St, opposite the Tinonee General Store. The park offers a great playground for the kids as well as double tennis courts which can be hired via Tinonee General Store. With BBQ and toilet facilities and a large oval where you can walk your leashed dog, it provides another fun option.

 

Tallships Reserve

Walk up to Tallships Reserve at the end of Peverill Street or drive if you are feeling laidback. Pack a picnic lunch, sit and enjoy the view of the Manning River as the children play on the tallship or in the sandpit ocean surrounding the boat. A lovely spot to relax.

Up around the corner on Beecher Street (no. 53 to be exact), is Tinonee General Store. Now home to the Australia Post sub-agency, it also houses the local bottle shop and a newsagency. The perfect place to pick up the basics and a few tasty nibbles, being five minutes from Tinonee Cottages makes it very convenient for guests. Oh, and they sell petrol too.

In the same compact shopping area you also have Tinonee Butchery and Tinonee Takeaway. If you need meat for the BBQ or a takeaway for an easy meal they are all available here and save you the need to drive into town. 

Either town – Wingham or Taree, is ten minutes’ drive down the road (but in different directions) and like all larger country towns they have supermarkets, shopping centres, medical practices, restaurants, pubs, clubs and loads more.

The historic village of Tinonee was one of the earliest settlements in the Manning Valley but today it provides the perfect base from which to explore.
